The City of Oakdale has a well-established park, trails, and recreation system; as of October 2024, there are 29 parks, with new parks planned for development in the coming years. However, several factors are impacting the system including significant City growth, changing demographics, interest in different park amenities, and aging park infrastructure.
In order to provide a system that meets demand and the needs of the community, the City developed a new Park System Plan. The Oakdale City Council approved the new Park System Plan on August 12, 2025, following a year and a half process that included engagement with the City Council, City advisory bodies, stakeholder groups, and the community. It will serve as a guiding roadmap that identifies and prioritizes recommendations for improvements, schedules, costs, and funding opportunities. Active living was also considered in the Plan to ensure that the City is creating a built environment where everyone feels safe, included, and able to participate in parks, thus encouraging people to lead healthier lives.
The City received Statewide Health Improvement Partnership (SHIP) funds from Living Healthy in Washington County (LHWC) to support active living considerations and engagement.
