New Public Works Facility

Current Project Status

The Oakdale Public Works facility is nearing completion. The modified schedule now has an expected move in date of March 2026 with a tentative grand opening event slated for late spring. More information will be provided when details are finalized.

The office area’s sheetrock has been installed and painting is underway. Locker room bathroom tile has been placed with installation of fixtures expected next month. The office areas will be the first section of the building fully completed.

The fleet storage area is nearing completion with lighting and heating systems now being installed. This is the largest space in the facility as it will safely store the Public Works vehicles.

The mechanics and operational areas have all interior walls completed. Installation of critical items to maintain the fleet like vehicle lifts, cranes, and lube equipment are next for completion.

Site work progress includes completion of the salt storage shed, fuel island, perimeter fencing, and the first layer of pavement. Final site work, including landscaping will be done in the spring as soon as weather permits.

Public Works Facility Project Update Video

On Thursday, January 25, 2024, the City of Oakdale hosted an open house for the public to learn more about the facility project. The video below highlights some of the information provided at the open house including project scope, project timeline, construction information and project design.

Background

With the support of voters in November of 2022, a new Public Works facility will be coming to Oakdale. Over the last year, the facility project team finalized the building design, began site preparation, and and has started preparation for construction. The City expects to break ground in Summer of 2024.

“The City has been working on planning for a new Public Works facility since 2018, and we’re thrilled to enter into the final planning and construction stages,” said City Administrator Christina M. Volkers. “This will be the first new City facility in over 20 years. Thanks to the support of Oakdale residents and businesses, the community can expect a modern and fully-functional Public Works facility in the near future.”

The project team includes the City of Oakdale (Project Owner); Hagen, Christensen & McIlwain Architects (Architect Firm); and Kraus-Anderson (Construction Management Firm).

In April 2023, the City Council formally accepted a donation from 3M of a 9.2-acre parcel of land for the future Public Works campus, located on the southwest corner of 32nd Street N and Granada Avenue N. Since 2020, 3M planned to donate the land to the City of Oakdale after conducting additional environmental investigations and site clean-up to prepare for redevelopment of the land. This clean-up work is funded by 3M and will conclude by Summer 2024.

Prior to breaking ground, the project team is finalizing the building design and materials, drafting construction documents, and securing bids for construction materials. Preparation of the site will include procurement, surveying and staging processes.
