Phone-Based and AI Scams

The Oakdale Police Department also urges residents to remain alert during suspicious phone calls and never share personal information. As technology advances, including the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) software, it is critical to takes steps to protect yourselves and prevent others from falling victim to scams. 

Scammers frequently change their tactics. Be aware of these common strategies: 

• Threats: Scammers may threaten arrest of legal action if you don’t pay them immediately. 
• False Claims: They might claim they need personal information or payment to activate a benefit increase, like a cost-of-living adjustment (COLA). 
• Urgency: Scammers often pressure you to act quickly and share personal information. 
• Unusual Payment Methods: They may ask for payment via gift cards, prepaid debit cards, wire transfers, cryptocurrency or even cash by mail.
• Bank Account Seizures: Scammers may threaten to take your bank account. 
• “Protected” Accounts: They could offer to move your money to a “protected” bank account.
• Direct Messages: Be cautious of direct messages on social media platforms.

Always remember the following tips:

• NEVER provide financial information over the phone even if the call seems legitimate or you are the one calling (i.e. making a return on a purchase).
• Do not use gift cards, cryptocurrency, ATMs or wire transfers for payments.
• If you have any doubts about the validity of a call, contact the Police Department.
