Introduction
The Oakdale Police Department has occupied its current facility, connected to City Hall at 1584 Hadley Avenue N, since 1992. During that time, its sworn officer staff has increased by 70% while complaint reports have increased 65%. Our Police Department needs more space to deal with the increased need for services due to a wide range of societal and caseload changes. Keeping Oakdale safe and offering the quality of life our residents and visitors deserve requires a modern police force operating out of modern facilities.
With the support of voters in November of 2022 for a local sales tax, a remodeled and expanded Police facility will be coming to Oakdale. In November of 2024, voters approved a five-year extension to the local sales tax to support this project.
Background
The Oakdale City Hall and Police Department are located at 1584 Hadley Avenue N. The facility was constructed in 1979 and has experienced only minor remodeling projects since then.
From 2015 to 2018, the City undertook a design process for the renovation and expansion of the Police Department. The design was completed to the Design Development phase but was never bid for construction. Past work will be available for use by the selected firm. Key documents from that effort are shown on Attachment A.
Since this past design effort, the Police Department needs and operations have changed along with a need for renovation to City Hall spaces. A fresh start to address the Police and City Hall needs is required.
The existing Police Department space is approximately 15,000 square feet and City Hall is approximately 9,000 square feet. There is approximately 4,000 square feet of shared space between Police and City Hall operations.
