Oakdale Police Chief William Sullivan retired on July 31, 2021 after over 33 years in Oakdale. City leadership engaged the executive recruiting firm Baker Tilly,US LLP to recruit the next police chief for Oakdale.
The recruitment process was very comprehensive and included submission of materials, video interviews, telephone and in-person interviews, feedback sessions with current police department staff, reference/academic checking, background investigation, and other various processes. 30 applicants were evaluated resulting in the selection of four finalists. Final interviews were conducted by several panels and many stakeholders on August 31 and September 1, 2021 and Newton emerged as the preferred candidate.
Newton is currently a Captain in the Oakdale Police Department and served as interim Police Chief since August 1, 2021. Newton has been a member of the Oakdale Police Department for 20 years, rising in rank from patrol officer to sergeant in 2006 to captain in 2020. Newton is a graduate of the FBI National Academy in Quantico, VA and the Northwestern University School of Police Staff and Command, in addition to holding both a Master’s Degree in Criminal Justice Leadership and a Bachelor’s Degree in Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice.
The council will act on Volkers' recommendation at their regular council meeting on September 14, 2021.
