Chief Building Official

The city is accepting applications for the position of full-time Chief Building Official. Oakdale is accepting applications for the position of full-time Chief Building Official. The City of Oakdale has some very exciting growth and development poised to take place over the next few years:  Willowbrooke neighborhood, 4Front/Slumberland, and Goldline Bus Rapid Transit Oriented Development - Helmo Station and Greenway Station (housing, office, and retail and services). The city is also working on a police station expansion and building a new public works facility. 

The ideal Building Official candidate will have excellent communication skills; extensive knowledge of building codes, regulations, and construction methods; ability to identify and help find solutions to permit and inspection issues; ability to multi-task and meet deadlines; and is a proven leader. It is expected the new Building Official will secure MN State Delegation for plan review and inspection services.  The Building Official currently manages several staff including a building inspector(s), administrative assistant, code enforcement officer, and contracted inspection services. 

Duties Include: Supervises all aspects of issuing, reviewing, and inspecting building, plumbing, and mechanical permits; supervises the rental housing program; supervises code enforcement and ordinance violation programs and works closely with the city attorney on enforcement and prosecution; develops and manages the Building Division budget; oversees contract inspection services; and attends City Council and city advisory body meetings as needed. 

Minimum Requirements:

  • Certified as a Building Official by the State of Minnesota
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Associate of Applied Science in Building Inspection Technology 
  • At least five years’ experience as a building inspector
  • Valid driver’s license with a driving record acceptable to the city’s insurance provider 

Salary:      $86,735 to $107,759 per year, plus excellent benefits package includes health and dental insurance, PERA pension, 12 paid holidays, and ample PTO package.
